Manica Musil

Born in Ptuj. At first she wanted to study piano, but soon changed her interest in other field of artistic creativity, in architecture. After graduation, her first building Municipal Building in Gorisnica (Slovenia) won international award Grand Prix at the international architectural competition ‘Leonardo’ for young architects of II. region UIA for the best realisation in Minsk, 2005. Meanwhile, she also won some awards in graphics. From 2002 till 2006 she published 11 Slovenian stamps. After the birth of first child (out of three), she expanded her creativity and began to write stories and poems. From 2011 till 2015 she published 6 authorial children books for different distinguished Slovenian publishers. After two of them, Two Little Architects and Magic Pencil, the project of Urban Children Installation was based, which was under the auspices of the European Capital of Culture 2012. The goal of the project was the inclusion of children into the open urban space(s), where children's creations are put on display for the public audience. Based on the one of her book, The Naughty Pigs, there will be a play in the Puppet Theatre in Maribor next year. Her books are more and more world widespread: one of her book was published in Brazil in 2014, and in 2016 she'll publish at least four books also in China. In the last two years she received first awards for illustrations: in 2014 she was among the winners of COW ILLUSTRATION FESTIVAL 2014, TOP 10 ILLUSTRATORS, Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, and in 2015 she got MERIT at the 3x3 Magazine International No.12 Picture Book Show, New York, USA. Animals from her books are inspirations for her everlasting aspiration to re-make them into installations for galleries or public spaces. Why not even parks… It is most probably her educational background in architecture that makes her perceive her books rather more as projects than simply as books. At last she remarks: 'When I will be old (which I'll probably never be) I want to have my own picture book museum. Eric Carle has it, there is one in Japan, why not third one.'
